The story
Dr. Patsy Mason has spent eighteen years beside her husband, Stanley James, ten of them married. He drove her to work and home every day, and she believed their love had never wavered. Then a young client named Shirley Barnes sits in her counseling office and describes making a married man fall in love with her, asking whether she should confess to his wife.
When Stanley pushes open the office door, his eyes find Shirley first, and she walks straight into his arms. He admits the affair began six months ago, after Shirley bet she could make him fall in love with her within seven days. He says he has fallen hopelessly in love with her, and that Patsy is too steady, too calm, like a pool of dead water.
For Patsy, it is the deepest wound of her life torn open again, by the one man who once saved her.

Six in the evening, in my counseling office, and the young woman across from me called herself a love diagnostician.
Her voice was thick with a grievance and a hurt that wouldn't dissolve.
"Dr. Mason, do you really believe there's such a thing as love that lasts a lifetime?"
She said she'd tested countless couples, husbands and wives, and not one of them had ever withstood the temptation.
