The story
Bradley has worked away from home for five years, trusting his wife Leah to raise their daughter Ann. Returning at last, he finds Ann bruised and beaten, while Leah kneels to comfort Jeff, the son of his old friend Dennis, who has been fostered in their house.
Leah dismisses the violence as a childish squabble and scolds Ann for defending herself, revealing how coldly she has treated the girl in his absence. When Dennis arrives, Jeff runs to him as a father, and Ann trembles at the man's voice. That night she begs Bradley to let her sleep beside him, saying she hates Uncle Dennis.
Bradley takes Ann to a hotel and calls his parents for help, vowing that those who hurt his daughter will not escape punishment.
