The story

When her daughter-in-law Marcella Abbott loses her job, Susan funds her dream of opening a restaurant with a million dollars of her own savings. To help the business grow, she brings friends and old classmates in to eat almost every day, always paying full price out of her own pocket.

Yet Marcella grows colder by the day, and the portions she serves Susan keep shrinking. A sixty-eight-dollar plate of roast beef arrives with only three pieces, and when Susan asks why, Marcella tells her to eat it or leave and never come back. Her son urges her to let it go for his sake, so she swallows her hurt.

Then, at a reunion dinner, Marcella blocks her path and accuses her of eating and drinking there for three months without paying a single bill, four hundred thousand dollars in all. Susan is stunned: she funded the restaurant, and she has paid for every meal. So where did the money go?

Opening

To help the place get off the ground, I brought people there to eat almost every day, doing everything I could to support her.

But Marcella always looked cold whenever she saw me, and the portions she served kept getting smaller.

I finally couldn't take it anymore, so I asked her..

"This roast beef is sixty-eight dollars a plate. Why are there only three pieces?"
