The story
On the morning of the College Entrance Exam, a Category 5 dust storm traps Serena's class on a charter bus pulled over on the highway. Chloe, the class president, urges everyone to walk the last mile to the testing center, and one by one the students follow her out into the blinding yellow dust. In a previous life, Serena blocked the door and held the whole class back, only to be blamed and killed by Chloe after the results. This time she stays in her seat and lets them go.
Only Serena and Tara remain aboard with Mr. Miller, the driver, as the wind rattles the windows. Ms. Lewis calls to say the board has triggered its emergency plan and every delayed student will get a makeup exam, then begs Serena to keep herself and Tara on the bus. The news comes too late for those already swallowed by the storm.
Then Zach, the biggest boy in class, pounds on the door and collapses inside, gashed and terrified, babbling that Kevin fell and that someone was blown away. Serena watches the storm she once tried to stop and wonders how far Chloe's certainty will carry them.
Opening
On the day of the College Entrance Exam, a massive dust storm trapped our entire class on the highway.
The charter bus was forced to pull over onto the shoulder. The driver told us our only option was to wait for rescue.
Chloe, our class president, stood up, slung her backpack over her shoulders, and got ready to get off the bus.
