The story
Andy wakes to a gentle hand on his cheek and finds his wife Sarah beside him, though he is certain she died in a plane crash only days ago. She teases him about oversleeping, and he clings to her, unable to tell whether her death was real or a nightmare. The date reads December 5th, 2022, the same day engraved on the headstone he remembers visiting.
Details from the dream keep surfacing: his late night at work, the half-packed suitcase by the sofa, and Sarah's two o'clock flight to Boston. Convinced it is a premonition, he begs her not to go, but she dismisses it as his subconscious and tells him to choose between work and her. He goes to work, yet on the subway the car darkens and a figure in black appears, echoing the dream.
Then he recalls that Sarah once mentioned running into Brenda White at the airport gate. If that meeting happens again, he cannot let her board.
Opening
I felt a gentle hand stroking my cheek.
Was it my wife, Sarah?
How could it be?
Sarah died just a few days ago.
My heart leaped in shock, and I forced my eyes open.
Going from darkness to sudden light stung my eyes.
I squinted, uncomfortable, but desperate to see the person by the bed.
She stood bathed in what felt like an explosion of white light, her form hazy, almost a silhouette.
As the stinging faded and my vision cleared, her features sharpened.
