The story
When Brandon is born, a line of numbers hovers over his head that only his parents can see: 6570 days, exactly eighteen years. For those eighteen years he is the most precious person in the family — the eggs, the new clothes and the meat are always his, while his younger sister Heidi can only watch. His parents count the days, prepared to send him off.
On his eighteenth birthday he blows out the candles and says goodbye to the world. The next morning he is still alive. His family, dressed in black, freezes; their sadness turns to astonishment, then coldness. The egg is no longer his, the storage room becomes his bedroom, and every broken bulb or burnt dinner is blamed on him. To his parents, the sacrifices of eighteen years have become meaningless.
When Heidi falls while reaching for candy and breaks her leg, Brandon is locked in the storage room without food or water, listening to his mother cooking and his father's footsteps outside.
Opening
When I was born, the nurse handed me over to my parents, and the smiles on their faces instantly vanished.
Hovering over their son's smooth head was a line of numbers that no one else could see.
6570 days.
It was exactly 18 years. Not a day more, not a day less.
