The story
For four years Eliza has been the devoted wife of Simon, a man who claims a severe intimacy disorder and an allergy to other people's bodily fluids. He wears gloves to hold her hand, sleeps in a separate bedroom, and keeps his distance behind masks and disinfectant. She has swallowed her grief and mourned the children they will never have, believing his trauma is real.
Then a dashcam memory card arrives from the mechanic, and the recordings inside it strip the lie bare. Simon's voice, tender and hungry, belongs to another woman: Mindy, the company's head of live-stream operations, who smiles at Eliza at the office and calls her mentor. A hotel receipt and a clinic visit confirm what the audio began, and Simon's only concern is that the anniversary livestream go ahead, with Eliza performing the loyal wife for the brand.
Cornered in a stairwell, his bare hand on her arm and no rash in sight, Simon offers an explanation. Eliza no longer believes a word of it.
Opening
Every time Simon held my hand, he wore a pair of powder-free nitrile gloves.
Even a kiss required a ritual: three vigorous rinses with antiseptic mouthwash, timed to thirty seconds each.
He claimed he had developed severe intimacy disorder—a psychological revulsion to human touch, coupled with a physical allergy to other people’s bodily fluids. For four years of marriage, we slept in separate bedrooms. Whenever he broke down and needed comfort, I held him through the heavy wool of our coats.
