The story
A mob boss on trial offers a deal: an address in exchange for his life. He describes the brutal murder of a police officer, Skye Miller, badge number 071923. The courtroom and live audience are shaken. But Sam rises and declares that Skye Miller is not dead—she is a fugitive he has hunted for seven years. Ordered to excavate the site, Sam drives into the frozen mountains, still wearing the faded cord bracelet Skye gave him, while strawberry charms fill his car—signs of Rose, the woman he now protects. Watching him, Skye knows he believes she betrayed her ideals, her father's badge, and him. Seven years ago, after they inherited their fathers' badge numbers and planned to marry, Sam's pity for Rose, a woman they rescued, drove a wedge between them. The tenderness that was once Skye's went to Rose, and a slap ended everything. Now Skye is a ghost haunting his new life, and the truth of her fall remains buried in the cold earth.
Opening
The trial was live-streamed. Just as the verdict for the mob boss was about to be read, he spoke up.
He said he’d trade an address for his life, to get the death penalty off the table.
"Back when I was just starting out, I witnessed a murder."
"The victim was one of yours."
"Skye Miller. Badge number 071923. Word is… her file was reopened three times."
"If I can give her a proper burial, wouldn't that count as a major contribution?"
The live chat exploded with outrage.
