The story
Elena Raymond has moved in with Archer Gallagher, the childhood best friend she has loved for twenty years. To Archer, she is simply his buddy—his platonic soulmate, stripped of gender—and he thinks nothing of holding her hand, sharing her straw, or handling her most delicate laundry. Every intimacy reserved for couples, he files under harmless best friendship.
But Archer carries a scar: as a boy he caught his mother with another man, and ever since, any woman who confesses romantic or physical desire is instantly cut from his life. Elena is the only woman who has stayed, precisely because he believes she wants nothing. If her secret ever slips, their bond shatters.
When Bianca Rowe corners Elena and threatens to expose the truth, the safe distance Elena has survived on begins to collapse.
Opening
I moved in with my childhood best friend.
Today, after a sweltering trek across the city, I unlocked our front door only to find him standing on the balcony, holding a piece of my freshly laundered lace underwear between two fingers.
He furrowed his brow, inspecting it with complete sincerity. "Since when do you wear blush pink?"
…
The midday heat followed me inside like an unwanted guest. Stepping into the foyer, my gaze instantly locked onto Archer.
