The story
Kate Campbell has spent three years hiding behind a black face mask, shielding herself from the stares that trigger her crippling social anxiety. To her classmates she is simply the school freak, until Damon, a new transfer student, drives off her tormentors and appoints himself her protector. Slowly, she begins to trust him enough to imagine removing the mask.
Then, on the eve of the senior graduation gala, she overhears Damon laughing with the very people who once tormented her. Every rescue, every gentle gesture, was scripted from the start, part of a bet to make her unmask herself on stage. Yet Kate does not retreat. She tells her therapist the unmasking is still on, and quietly arranges for a spotlight video of her bare face to play right after Damon's performance.
Opening
To escape the weight of everyone's eyes, I spent years hiding behind a black face mask.
Naturally, that made me the school’s favorite freak.
They hauled my desk into the boys' locker room, scrawled "UGLY" across my gym uniform in permanent marker, and eventually cornered me in the athletic equipment shed, demanding that I take the mask off.
That was the day Damon, the new transfer student, kicked the door off its latch.
He pulled me behind him and turned a glacial stare on the crowd.
"If she doesn't want to show her face, none of you touch her."
