The story
Three years after college, Brian's corporate life collapses into clinical depression. He returns to his hometown, where his mother greets his illness with contempt, calling it an act for attention. She pushes him into blind dates, and when Megan appears—patient and gentle—she seems to pull him from his darkest spirals. But on the porch, Megan echoes his mother's words, urging him to settle down and stop being selfish.
Brian pushes her out of his life. His mother drags Megan back inside and proposes an engagement party that weekend. When Brian refuses, his father slaps him and twists his arm, demanding an apology. His mother warns his father not to bruise his face before the date.
Trapped in a town that measures him against everyone else's perfection, Brian must decide whether he can break free of a family that sees him only as an obedient fixture.

When my mother opened the front door, there was no relief in her eyes. Not even a flicker of warmth.
"Kids these days are made of glass," she said, barely stepping aside to let me in. "A little pressure and suddenly it's 'depression.' Back in my day, we didn't have time for imaginary illnesses."
