The story
A phone call from her childhood friend Colin Porter sends Selena rushing into a burning building, certain he is trapped inside. She drags out a terrified cat and burns her arms, only to find Colin safe in the crowd, laughing with his friends. The fire was another of his pranks, staged to win back Joyce Sherman's cat, Queenie. The onlookers jeer, calling her a simp, while Colin hands the cat to Joyce and thanks Selena as if she were a servant.
For ten years Selena has endured Colin's tests and humiliations, bound by guilt toward his mother Lauren Porter, who once supported her after her parents died. Now, engaged and finished with his games, she asks only that Joyce cover the cat rescue and her medical bills. Colin mocks her ring and her desperation, and when Joyce claims the cat scratched her, he blames Selena, pinning her down and demanding an apology she refuses to give.
Opening
He wanted to hear my voice one last time, and I rushed to the scene as fast as I could.
But in that small, blazing spot, there was only a cat.
Stumbling, I got the cat out, but my arms got burned.
A crowd gathered, pointing at me and laughing hysterically.
"She actually went for it?"
"What a simp, risking her life like that!"
Safe and sound, Colin Porter stepped out of the crowd with a grin.
He picked up the cat from my arms and handed it to his crush. "See? I told you the cat would be fine. When have I ever lied to you?"
