The story
Finn Randall has spent eighteen years as the family scapegoat. Adopted by Derek Randall and Alessia Johnson after their own son was lost, he is blamed for their misfortune and branded a jinx. He does the chores, raises his younger sister Rayne Randall, and hands over every paycheck while his parents look away.
When months of stomach pain end in surgery for gallstones and severe infection, his family refuses to pay and no one visits. Sent home with a drainage bag, Finn is ordered to buy and cook fresh salmon for Rayne, then told he cannot eat any of it himself.
He buys a discount fish and a large dose of laxatives from the pharmacy. As the family eats, he waits to see whether they will still be laughing soon.
Opening
Before I even reach the front door, I hear Rayne Randall, my sister who's ten years younger than me, wailing at the top of her lungs.
"Dad, there's a splinter in my finger! It hurts so much!"
"Let me blow your booboo away for you, Ray. It won't hurt anymore once I'm done."
As soon as I open the front door, I see my dad rolling his eyes at me. His previously happy disposition quickly morphs into an annoyed one.
