The story
Annie can understand animals. The stray cats outside her apartment know what her father is planning: a birthday trip to the wilderness that is really a way to abandon her, because his pregnant new wife Jenna wants her gone. Annie already knows, and says nothing. She spends her saved lunch money on fishy treats for the cats, especially Ginger, the cat her mother once brought home as her sister, whom her father threw out after her mother died.
Then a tabby she has never seen before offers her a new father. When her father's car breaks down on the road, Ginger's cries pull Annie away, and the tabby leads her to a man in a suit who calls the cat Rocky and weeps over him. The cat refuses to let Annie go, and a small crowd gathers around them.
Opening
The day my dad decided to take me on a trip to the wilderness, the stray cats downstairs were holding a meeting.
"The poor kid. She has no idea her dad's getting remarried."
"Worse, the new stepmom is pregnant and doesn't like her. They're planning to take her out to the middle of nowhere and leave her."
