The story

Nora has spent five years living with a weak heart and a boyfriend, Ethan, who always puts Chloe first. Every time her condition sends her to the emergency room, he promises to come after he helps Chloe, but he never arrives. Even when Nora receives a terminal cardiac arrest warning, Ethan is busy cutting Chloe's steak.

Now, as an elevator cable snaps and the car plunges from the thirtieth floor, Ethan finally messages that he will come pick Nora up. It is too late. Her soul drifts through the hospital corridor, watching Ethan dote on Chloe, then trail him home to the dark apartment where her warning document and empty pill bottle mean nothing to him.

He buys the raspberry mille-feuille she can no longer eat and believes a dessert will end her sulking, certain she will appear for their fifth anniversary.

Opening

Suffocating from my failing heart, I gasped for air. Instinctively, I dialed my boyfriend, Ethan’s, number.

Busy. Then, he hung up.

A second later, a photo popped up on my Snapchat: "Chloe sprained her ankle. I’m at the ER getting her checked out."

In the five years we lived together, my weak heart sent me to the ER fifty-six times.
