The story
When David and Nina sign their divorce papers, she asks only for the cars, the house, the savings and half the shares in his company. She leaves behind Leo and Mia, the children she was never allowed to raise, and drops David's business card into the nearest trash can. At home she orders his belongings thrown out and smashes their wedding portrait, while the housekeeper Maria, who has witnessed every humiliation, tells her she can live better without him.
At eighteen, Nina was a top student from a small town, courted by David Thorne, a wealthy alumnus who fought his family to marry her. But the Thorne matriarch took her newborn son Leo from her arms, and later her daughter Mia, declaring her background unfit. David's affairs and indifference followed, and her children grew to resent her.
After ten years, the fairytale of the prince and the cinder-girl has ended, and Nina walks away with something like the dizzying joy of a survivor.
Opening
He asked, with a veneer of concern, what I wanted.
My answer came without a second thought.
"The cars, the house, the savings."
"And half the shares in your company."
David froze, a flicker of surprise in his eyes.
"What about the children? You don't want either of them?"
"You love them so much. Can you really bear to leave Leo and Mia behind?"
My gaze fell to the latticework of scars on my wrist, a silent testament to years of self-inflicted pain.
I gave a small, slow shake of my head.
