The story
After ten hours in Operating Room 7, Dr. Chloe Hayes steps into the corridor to find surgical intern Liam Carter blocking her path. In front of the nurses' station, he tears the schedule off the wall and announces her suspension on the authority of the Chief of Medicine. No one speaks. The charge nurse says nothing; the residents look away.
The Chief of Medicine is Arthur Sterling, her husband. His message is brief: don't cause a scene, let him handle it. He never appears. Back in her office, her nameplate has already been removed. By morning her portal access is gone and every surgery assigned to her reads Pending Assignment.
Yet Chloe has one appointment no administrator can quietly erase: she is the lead surgeon for the liver transplant of Eleanor Davis, the Mayor's wife. Her message to Mayor Richard Davis is already sent.
Opening
I had just pulled down my mask, my hands barely out of the sterile field, when the question hit me like a slap to the face.
I looked up. Liam Carter stood in the center of the hallway, his lab coat crisp, his ID badge glaring under the fluorescent lights.
"As of right now, you are suspended."
The surrounding area instantly fell silent.
The lights at the nurses' station were on, and several doctors stopped dead in their tracks, all eyes turning toward…
