The story
A doctor's calm voice delivers the news: the cancer has spread, chemotherapy must start at once, and the pregnancy cannot continue. Six months along, Diana Hartwell sits alone in the hospital, her hands shaking, and reaches for the phone to call her husband, Jameson.
Rose answers instead. From his bed, Jameson laughs and says he only married Diana for the inheritance, that once the baby is born they will get rid of her, and that he loves Rose. Diana sinks onto the cold floor, then calls her grandfather and asks to come home, promising to divorce Jameson and end the pregnancy.
But the prenup bars her from filing without a grandfather's written consent, and at home a wet floor, a fall, and a fire leave Diana fighting for her life and her unborn daughter.
Opening
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Hartwell…” The doctor’s voice was calm, too calm. “But the cancer cells have progressed. They’re spreading faster than we expected.”
I stared blankly at him, blinking once. “What… what does that mean?”
He paused—like he was choosing his words carefully, but every second only made it worse. “It means continuing your pregnancy will significantly lower your chances of survival. We need to begin chemotherapy immediately. Which means…”
I didn’t breathe.
