The story
Milton has been deaf since he was beaten while protecting Penelope, the woman he pursued for three years before she agreed to marry him. What she does not know is that his hearing has returned, and that he has already discovered her affair with Darren Valdez, the man their son Hughie Peters openly calls his real father. At a party, Milton hears his wife's friends joke about how easily a deaf husband can be deceived, and watches Darren kiss her in front of everyone.
Milton keeps his secret and says nothing. He has already applied for a teaching volunteer program in Lumora and bought his ticket; in seven days, once the paperwork is approved, he will vanish from Penelope's world forever, just as they once promised whoever betrayed the other first would.
Back home, when Penelope reaches for him in the dark, Milton shoves her away. She is not angry, only worried, and signs to ask what is wrong. He must keep pretending he cannot hear her, even as he decides he no longer wants her or Hughie at all.
Opening
Penelope set the sliced steak down in front of me and said softly, "I made a promise with your daddy. Whoever betrayed the other first would disappear from the other person's world forever. I can't afford for that to happen. After the baby is born, it'll still be your daddy's child."
After saying that, Penelope signed to me that she would love me forever.
But she didn't notice my reddened eyes.
