The story
Nina Brown has been married to Julian Hayes for seven years, ever since she left Sorrin for Capin. She loves spicy food, but Julian claims spice makes him sick, so she has lived on thin soup and bland meals, keeping her mother's chili packs at the back of the cabinet until they expire.
On her birthday, Nina sees Julian at a stew shop, sweating over bright red chili stew and eating from the hand of a young woman. She realizes he never hated spice; he only refused to eat it with her. When he leaves her to meet the woman, Nina calls a lawyer to begin the divorce papers she had mentioned.
Her mother, Aubrey Smith, urges her to come home, and Nina packs her belongings. At Julian's company she meets Fiona Stewart, who calls herself his assistant and invites her to eat. Fiona orders the spicy dishes Julian once refused, and he tells the waiter that Nina eats bland food. Nina stands and says she likes spice, then picks up her bag and leaves.
Opening
My name is Nina Brown. I've been married to Julian Hayes for seven years, ever since I left Sorrin for Capin.
We can never eat the same meal.
I love spicy food, but the second he smells spice, he slams his fork down.
I made a spicy fish stew at home once.
He smashed his plate and fork and gave me the cold shoulder for a month.
