The story
Aria Henson has spent ten months carrying a child that is not hers. The baby in her womb belongs to her husband Percival Stephens and her half-sister Rose Henson, and everyone in high society believes she surrendered out of love, becoming their willing incubator. Only Aria knows the truth: the Stephens family matriarch, Evelyn Stephens, called in a debt, a life for a life, promising Aria her freedom in exchange for carrying the child to term.
When the boy is born, Percival presents a birth certificate bearing the name Aria once chose for her own lost son, the child she lost after he shoved her aside and she found him with Rose. Then, when Evelyn turns her cane on Rose in the hospital hallway, Percival drops the newborn onto Aria's fresh incision and runs to shield her half-sister, leaving his wife bleeding and alone.
Aria's composure unsettles everyone who remembers the woman who once begged him to stay. The divorce she was promised has yet to arrive, and the Stephens family has no intention of letting her go quietly.
