The story
After ten years in London, Graham Shaw returns to New York, and Elias Miller finally hands his wife Elena Hastings the divorce papers. Elena is an heiress to the Hastings architectural legacy; Elias has spent a decade as the substitute husband, the man who filled the space Graham left behind. He tells her he is done living in the ruin of their marriage.
Elena insists she has been faithful, but Elias counts the signs: missed calls, late nights, a gourmet meal prepared for Graham and none left for him, a pen engraved with her name, a hidden folder of Graham's photographs. She calls it a misunderstanding; he calls it a slow-motion execution of a marriage that was never truly his.
As Elias walks out into the October rain, the city's North Shore Riverfront project enters its RFP stage, and the shortlist is about to be revealed.
Opening
The day Graham Shaw touched down at JFK after a decade in London, I handed my wife the divorce papers.
Elena Hastings didn’t scream. She didn’t even flinch. She simply set down her tea—a delicate bone china cup filled with an Earl Grey that smelled like bergamot and indifference—and looked at me with those cool, slate-gray eyes that I had spent ten years trying to decipher.
"I haven’t been unfaithful, Elias," she said.
Her tone was flat, a professional monotone she usually reserved for dismissing a junior architect’s poorly drafted floor plan.
