The story
Lydia Webb has spent seven years beside Victor Palmerston, three of them as his wife, quietly building the core technology behind his company. On the way to a billion-dollar bid in New York, Victor cancels her ticket and hands her seat to Sophie Lowell, a young assistant he insists cannot handle a transfer. Stranded, Lydia reaches the hotel only to find her room canceled and her clothes on Sophie's back.
Victor orders her to surrender her presentation script and core data so Sophie can take the stage, then has security remove her into the rain. Without Lydia's encryption key, the contract can never be signed.
Soaked and numb, Lydia makes a call: a divorce agreement, and a notice revoking technical authorization, timed for nine the next morning.
Opening
"The airline announced the flight was overbooked, so I already canceled your ticket."
I froze. There were three of us traveling together. The female assistant was the one on standby. By rights, she should have been the one bumped.
