The story
She was the most untouchable woman in the city. Her four brothers lit her cigars in unison and shielded her from every storm, and the Rhodes family gave her power and wealth that eclipsed old money. Only one thing was missing: blood. So when her birth parents, the Ellingtons, tracked her down and begged her to come home, she braced herself for warmth.
Instead, she walked into a performance. Their frail foster daughter, Serena, wept about stealing her place, and the family turned on Corinne for refusing to play the gracious saint. Her brother Conrad wiped his fingers after touching her wrist and tossed a contract at her; her father demanded she sign or lose the Ellington name. They wanted her to stay in her lane and stop coveting what belonged to Serena.
Corinne did not sign. She had no need of their scraps, and she let them know the title of father requires far more than a strand of DNA.
Opening
Whenever I reached for a cigar, I never touched a lighter; my four brothers would strike gold flames in unison before I could even draw a breath. When the skies broke into a downpour, I never carried an umbrella, because a wall of tailored suits was always there to shield me from the storm.
I had everything a person could ever desire—wealth, influence, unconditional devotion.
My only curse was blood.
