The story
Tessa has spent three years bending herself to fit into Harrison's world, laughing off his friends' jabs and excusing every slight. At the county clerk's counter, on the day they are meant to marry, Hannah tears Harrison's birth certificate and state ID in half while Tyler and the others jeer that Tessa was never going to climb into the Hughes family so easily. Harrison does not stop them; he admits he told Hannah to do it, calling Tessa's devotion suffocating.
With the intake system about to lock, the clerk refuses to issue a license without verified documents. Tessa walks away from the laughing crowd, dials a number she memorized two months ago, and accepts a merger offer on one condition: if Rhys Mercer can reach City Hall in four minutes, she will marry him instead.
Harrison follows her to the bench, calling her tantrum an embarrassment, but Tessa finally names the hidden pitch deck, the ruined anniversary, the hours stranded at JFK. Hannah's apology comes too late, and the hall falls silent.
