The story
Simon was born with selective mutism and severe autism, and his mother tried every desperate measure to cure him. When his baby sister cried, he spoke his first words, and from that day the girl became his speaking doll: the longer and harder she cried, the more words he produced. She learned to weep on cue before his recitations, and when tears would not come, her mother used pain to coax them out.
Everything changes on the day Simon is to meet his wealthy biological father. Simon freezes and cannot speak, and his father leaves in disappointment. Her mother drags the girl to the rooftop, ties a rope around her waist and suspends her over the edge, demanding that Simon speak to save her. The rope frays thread by thread, and this time the girl does not cry; she smiles up at her brother, who begs their mother to pull her back.
As a crowd gathers below and sirens wail, the girl's father, Charles, arrives and grips the rope beside Simon, but Eleanor, lost in her delusion, refuses to pull her up.

My older brother, Simon, was born with selective mutism and severe autism. To cure him, our mother tried every desperate measure imaginable.
When I was a year old, I accidentally rolled off the bed and started crying hysterically.
Miraculously, Simon spoke his very first words.
"Sister... fell. It hurts."
"Mom, make it better for sister."
But the moment I stopped crying, Simon sank back into complete silence.
My mother looked at me, and her eyes filled with a sudden, terrifying hope.
From that day on, I became Simon's speaking doll.
