The story
After the Great War, the military prostitutes were to be sold into the lowest brothels. To escape that fate, the younger women tried every trick to seduce the surviving soldiers into taking them home. Rose, once the cherished daughter of the Minister of Revenue and the Capital's Peony, waits in an almost empty camp with only an old, dying prostitute for company.
A taciturn, dark-skinned Captain named Zane drives off a scoundrel who attacks her and offers to take her away. But Rose is entangled with General Peyton, who keeps her and promises that nothing between them will change after he marries the princess. He never asks about the man who came for her, so sure she will not leave.
Yet Rose has already agreed to go with Zane, and the day Peyton weds the princess is the day she would wed Zane. Between a proud general's certainty and a quiet captain's offer, she must decide whose promise to trust.

When the taciturn, dark-skinned Captain came looking for me, the entire camp was empty except for me and an old woman dying of a terminal illness.
She laughed at me:
"Little Rose, if someone is willing to take you, just go. Who are you waiting for? Don't tell me it's that high-and-mighty General Peyton, who's about to marry the princess?"
