The story
Mia lives in a house where the thermostat is locked at 60 degrees, because Chloe, the woman her husband Carter has installed in the guest room, runs hot from hyperthyroidism. When period cramps leave Mia in agony, she cuts the AC power cord and turns up the heat; Carter calls it a tantrum and shuts off her access to the smart-home controls. Before his business trip he took every duvet in the house for Chloe, yet buying Mia a bottle of Advil was a waste of his time.
Mia lists the property at a fire-sale price and has buyers tour it the next morning. Chloe shrieks at the strangers, and Carter cancels his trip and flies back, waving joint ownership documents to stop the sale. He drapes his jacket over Chloe and orders ten cheap synthetic duvets dumped at Mia's feet, telling her to stop using self-harm to beg for attention.
Mia stops arguing and becomes a ghost in her own home, until she finds smart security cameras aimed along her daily path and Carter in the guest room, silencing her while Chloe runs a livestream.
Opening
Looking at the thermostat locked at 60 degrees for the thirteenth time, I grabbed a pair of scissors and cut the power cord running to the AC unit on the wall.
Early yesterday morning, period cramps had me rolling in bed in pure agony.
I turned the thermostat up to 78 degrees.
But less than ten seconds later, the temperature plummeted right back down to its lowest setting.
On the other end of the phone, Carter sighed, sounding entirely exasperated.
