The story
When Adrian Bennett regains consciousness after a car accident, his memory is gone. Beside his hospital bed stand two women: Vivian, the ex-girlfriend who once abandoned him, and Sarah Clark, the secretary who has stood by him for seven years. Sarah speaks first, telling him that Vivian is his wife and that she herself is merely his personal secretary.
Vivian is stunned by the lie, but Sarah insists she knows Adrian loves Vivian, and that she and Adrian are not legally married yet. Privately, Sarah carries a vision of a future in which Adrian, once his memory returns, chooses Vivian and sends Sarah to a psychiatric hospital, where she dies in a fire. Having seen that ending, she no longer wishes to hold on.
As Vivian takes her place at Adrian's bedside, Sarah hands over his keys and recites his habits, then walks away, changing his name in her phone from Husband to Mr. Bennett. The burden is set down, and Vivian must now bear Adrian's temper in her stead.
Opening
When I found out, he swore to me right there: "I just want to punish her. I have absolutely no feelings for her whatsoever."
I didn't lose it.
Instead, I made her Adrian's personal assistant.
Vivian grabbed my hand and promised over and over: "Don't worry, we'll only have a professional relationship. I would never come between you two."
I believed her.
After all, when the Bennett family went bankrupt years ago, Vivian humiliated Adrian to no end just to get rid of him.
