The story
When Larry, her twelve-year-old son, wins a place at the county's top STEM academy, Lydia expects a night of quiet celebration. Instead, her husband Marcus calmly tells her he has already declined the seat, so that it will roll over to Dylan, the son of her best friend Whitney. He calls it generosity; Lydia sees the cost falling, once again, on her and her child.
For years Marcus has answered Whitney's every panic, leaving Larry and Lydia behind in freezing rain, emptying their savings for her whims, and dismissing Lydia's anger as coldness. Now Whitney arrives at their door, asking to borrow Marcus as Dylan's father figure for the school orientation, and Marcus turns on Lydia when she hesitates.
As her parents' message from Costa Rica offers Larry a place in San José, Lydia types her answer, ready to give Whitney the house, the marriage, and the husband too.
Opening
The night our twelve-year-old son, Larry, received his acceptance letter to the county’s top-tier STEM academy, I was at the dining table, neatly organizing his medical records and enrollment forms for registration the following morning.
Marcus walked up behind me, his shadow falling long across the paperwork.
"You don't need to finish those," he said, his voice terribly calm. "I called the admissions office this afternoon and declined his spot."
