The story
Six months after Ryan Holt returned to their marriage, he is still trying to quit Winnie Lowe. He says her name without thinking, murmurs her comfort in his sleep, and keeps her birthday as his phone passcode. Shay Moore watches him remind himself, in red ink across their wedding photo, of the woman he is supposed to love.
When Shay finally uses that passcode and reaches Winnie, she learns the truth Ryan never told her: he has ALS, and he left Winnie to spare her the burden. Winnie begs to stay with him, calling Shay jealous and crazy. Shay realizes Ryan came home to be cared for, not loved, and that she has spent six months getting over him too.
She signs the old divorce agreement, under which Ryan leaves with nothing, and tells him she is divorcing him. He laughs, certain she is lying. Then Winnie limps in and wraps her arms around him.
Opening
For his birthday, I made him a chocolate cake from scratch. The moment he saw it, he said without thinking, "Too bad she prefers matcha."
I'd never been afraid of thunder. But one night, with lightning flashing and thunder crashing outside, he pulled me into his arms in his sleep and murmured, "Don't be afraid."
On Winnie's birthday, I watched him enter a long string of numbers from memory. He tossed and turned all night, but somehow stopped himself from making the call.
