The story
Joanna's husband Simon calls himself a champion of gender equality, and he enforces it to the last cent: dinners split down to the penny, every Uber ride reimbursed at exactly fifty percent, even the marriage license repaid in half. When Joanna's water breaks, Simon's executive assistant Camille arrives at the hospital to announce that Joanna's four-thousand-dollar admission copay has not cleared. Simon refuses to sign the guarantee slip, orders her legs bound and the birth pushed back, and denies her an epidural as an elective expense her balance cannot cover. As the contractions mount, Joanna sees the diamond at Camille's throat and begs for sixteen hours until her monthly allowance arrives. Camille's sudden pain over an old fracture turns Simon's pen away from the voucher, and the monitor begins to shriek.
Opening
My husband called himself a hardcore champion of gender equality. He took it so far that even in our most intimate moments, everything had to be accounted for, stroke for stroke.
"Thirty-seven, thirty-eight... Honey, you took two extra touches tonight. I'm adding that to your tab."
Whenever tears welled in my eyes and I protested the sheer indignity of it, he would gather me against his chest, pressing soft, coaxing kisses to my temple.
"I'm not being stingy, Jo," he would whisper. "I do this because I respect you as an independent woman. A true equal."
