The story
For seven years, Irene has loved Jasper Reynolds in secret, and on her twenty-fifth birthday he kneels by the riverfront and slides a diamond onto her finger while fireworks light the water. Strangers call the proposal a fairy tale, and Irene lets herself believe it.
Then a livestream pulls her under. Lexie, the girl who made her school years a torment, tells her audience that the man on his knee is her ex, and the guest with the blank black avatar sends rockets instead of denying it. Lexie claims the antique ring was turned down three years ago, the fireworks were booked for an anniversary that never came, and the whole spectacle was a message to her. When Irene dials Jasper's private number, the ringtone sounds through the broadcast, and his voice answers Lexie with an easy, dismissive laugh.
Irene stands in the dark of the home they share, remembering the boy who once unbolted a door and held her through panic attacks, and wondering what any of it was ever meant to be.
