The story
Five years after Liana was abducted on her wedding night and held in a remote mountain village, her husband Zane Gordon rescued her and swore to punish everyone who had hurt her. The Bailey family was destroyed, Vanessa Bailey was sent to prison, and Zane spent five years kneeling beside Liana through her depression and self-harm, taking twice the pain onto himself.
Now pregnant again, Liana dares to hope for a new life and goes to the chapel to find Zane. Through a half-open door she sees him with Vanessa, who claims the Baileys were never ruined, that Zane hid them abroad, and that she has spent five years kept close and comfortable. Vanessa also says she is two months pregnant.
When Liana confronts him, Zane asks whether five years of punishment is not enough and whether they cannot call it even, leaving her to face how much of her suffering was real.
Opening
Five years ago, on my wedding night with Zane Gordon, his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Bailey—who hates me with a passion—abducts me, and I vanish for three whole months.
When Zane and his men finally find me in a remote mountain village, I'm locked in a cellar, my belly swollen, my eyes hollow and lifeless.
