The story
Wendy has always believed her boyfriend Gerald comes from a poor family, so she works long shifts moving heavy boxes at a bar to support them both. Then, while working, she sees Gerald drinking wine worth 100,000 and tipping generously, and learns that the watch he casually gives away is worth millions.
Worse, she discovers he is the wealthy Mr. Peterson, the man a young student named Cissy adores. Hidden among the staff, Wendy overhears Gerald call their year together a mere bet and dismiss her as tiresome, even as he leans on Cissy and later comes home wearing the cheap shirt Wendy bought him.
Now Wendy must decide how much of her sacrifice and love was ever real to him.
Opening
I always thought my boyfriend came from a poor family.
One day, I saw him drink a bottle of wine worth 100,000 while tipping the waiter over 1,000.
The watch he gave away without a second thought was worth millions.
Yet, his gift for my birthday was a dirt-cheap trinket.
He claimed it was a test to make sure I was not a gold digger.
Later on, I proved that I was not a gold digger.
