The story
For ten years, Chloe has followed Ethan Vance, and when he finally blindfolds her and promises a surprise, she believes the proposal is real. Instead, a bucket of freezing water soaks her while Ethan and his friends laugh, betting on whether she would fall for the prank. He tosses her a tarnished bracelet pulled from a trash can and tells her to find some random guy before she dies alone with ten cats.
Chloe already knows the truth. She overheard Ethan's office bet the day before, and she saw how fiercely he guards Serena, the classical music student he calls his muse. Still, she calmly ties her hair with the bracelet and tells them she has wedding toasts to make. When Ethan grabs her wrist and Brad, the friend she loathes, tries to claim her, she insists her husband is waiting outside.
Serena arrives, and Ethan passes Chloe off to Brad to hide the truth. Chloe dares them all to come to City Hall and see for themselves, but her last invitation is already mailed. Ten years of promises have come due, and her groom is not Ethan.
Opening
Following Ethan Vance around for ten long years, he finally asked me to marry him.
He even put a blindfold on me, whispering that he had a massive surprise waiting.
But the second I took a single step into the room, a bucket of freezing cold water splashed right over my head.
"Chloe, when the hell are you going to wake up?"
"Did you honestly think I would ever marry you?"
My hands trembled as I ripped off the blindfold. There he was, sitting on the plush leather couch, casually sipping a glass of whiskey.
"See? I told you she’d fall for it! Whoever bet against me, pay up!"
