The story
For three years, Nina Springfield has been married to Charles Green in name only. He never acknowledged her as his wife, blaming her for the death of his sister Helen, who died on their wedding day. Convinced Nina poisoned Helen out of obsessive love, Charles torments her relentlessly, flaunts other women, and lets his friends mock her. When he slides a diamond ring onto Lilu Ximmer's finger at his birthday party and calls himself single, Nina finally decides to leave.
But as she drags her luggage out of the villa, Charles returns, drags her back inside, and refuses to let her go. His grip is like a vice, and his fury terrifies the Uber driver who tries to help. When police arrive to investigate a report that a woman is being held against her will, Charles calmly claims his wife is merely throwing a tantrum.
Nina insists she is not his wife and that their union was only a trade deal. Charles's eyes, once full of rage, now shine with tears and an emotion she cannot understand. He will not let her go, and she cannot break free.
Opening
Lilu stared at the ring and felt flattered. “Charles, are you really going to divorce her and marry me?”
Charles raised an eyebrow in amusement. “I’m single.”
We had been married for three years, but Charles, my husband, never once acknowledged me as his wife.
It was because I caused his sister’s death.
