The story
Three months into his marriage, Ethan Carter is handed a kidney-donation consent form by his wife, Olivia Hayes. The Hayes family owes Nathan Drake Jr., her brother-in-law, and Olivia insists Ethan must give him one of his kidneys. Though Ethan has already lost a third of his stomach, he finally nods. The surgery succeeds, and a month later he is discharged.
Back home, Olivia presents a wife-rental contract: Ethan must lend her to Nathan for three years to conceive an heir, with marital intimacy prohibited. When he refuses, Mrs. Hayes hurls a teacup at him and calls him a nobody, while relatives urge him to obey. Olivia tells him there is no choice, only necessity. Ethan demands a divorce.
Olivia leaves to care for Nathan in Miami, posting their travels online. Then she returns pregnant, and tells Ethan to keep the company running and claim the baby as his own. Calm at last, Ethan calls Attorney Collins about an asset transfer already underway.
Opening
Just when I was trying to figure out how to comfort him, Olivia Hayes handed me a kidney-donation consent form.
“Ethan, it’s our Hayes family that owes Nathan.
Now that you’ve married into the Hayes family, you should give him one of your kidneys.”
I stared at the document, stunned, then pushed it back.
