The story
Maya has built a six-figure career in Chicago, and her mother has spent years quietly counting on it. When her cousin Chloe is accepted into an advanced ballet intensive in Paris, her mother demands $15,000 for the tuition, instructing Maya to keep a hundred dollars for groceries and send the rest immediately.
A wedding brings Maya back to her hometown, where she overhears her mother and Chloe through a thin front door: the money is expected, the old loans are forgotten, and Maya herself is mocked as plain, difficult, and useful only for her salary. She drives back to Chicago through the night, and by morning a sudden, searing pain sends her to the emergency room, where doctors suspect a malignant tumor and order further tests.
When Maya sends the report and asks to keep the money for treatment, her mother calls it a tasteless joke and presses again for the transfer. Maya must decide what she still owes the family that raised her and what she owes herself.

My mother asked me for $15,000 to pay for it.
