The story
Grandma is dying of lung cancer, and she keeps murmuring Mason Gilbert's name, clutching the insoles she stitched for him by hand. Naomi calls her husband again and again, begging him to come to the hospital once. He snaps that Fiona's pig has a fever and hangs up. The heart monitor flatlines, and Grandma dies with her eyes open, waiting for a visitor who never comes.
Naomi buries her alone. When Mason finally returns to the villa, he tosses her a designer bag stained with Fiona's lipstick, then throws Grandma's insoles into the trash, calling them cheap. Naomi sets the divorce agreement before him. He refuses to sign and walks out, warning her to calm down.
Eight years of marriage, ninety-six pairs of insoles, and a love Naomi mistook for devotion. Now she is done, and the papers are waiting.
Opening
Grandma was in the final stages of lung cancer. As she lay on the hospital bed, clinging to the last threads of life, she kept murmuring his name.
In her hands, she tightly gripped a pair of shoe insoles—a birthday gift she had stitched for her grandson-in-law with her own trembling hands.
Weeping, I called Mason Gilbert over a dozen times, begging him to come to the hospital. Just once. Just to see Grandma one last time.
When the call finally connected, my husband's voice dripped with impatience.
"Fiona's pig has a fever," he snapped. "We're rushing to the vet. Don't bother me."
