The story
For three years, Nora kept her pride intact with Garrett Pierce, splitting every bill to the penny and never touching his old money. Then her younger sister, Serena, calls in tears claiming she has stomach cancer and needs fifty thousand dollars for treatment. Desperate, Nora swallows her dignity and asks Garrett for a loan.
His answer is a low chuckle. The call turns to FaceTime, and there is Serena, healthy and curled beneath Garrett's arm in his high-rise condo. She warned him months ago, he says, that Nora was setting up a shakedown. The wedding is still on for Saturday, he tells her, as though offering a generous settlement.
At his condominium, Nora finds Serena's heels beside his loafers and the two of them unmoved by her fury. Serena casts her as a practised gold-digger pulling the breakup card for leverage, and Garrett believes every word. Nora remembers the five years she wired her sister a thousand dollars a month, and the groom she once chose is done.

Garrett Pierce despised opportunists. It was an article of faith with him, a deep-seated paranoia bred from old money and bad experiences. In the three years we dated, I made it my personal rule never to touch a single cent of his.
I paid my share of the groceries, split the utilities down to the penny, and kept my pride meticulously intact.
Until the Tuesday my younger sister, Serena, told me she had stomach cancer.
