The story
On the couple's fifth wedding anniversary, Josh Mason arrives at the celebration holding a baby and tells his wife, Evelyn, to accept the child if she wishes to remain Mrs. Mason. The guests assume she will yield, as she always has, but Evelyn topples the champagne tower and demands a divorce instead.
Josh dismisses her reaction as a tantrum, insisting she simply adopt the infant. Yet the baby resembles his mother, Sierra Thorne, Josh's former love and now his personal secretary. When Evelyn confronts Sierra before the crowd, Josh shields her and calls their relationship purely professional, while whispers about the Mason family's influence in Crestwood fill the room.
Evelyn slips off the wedding ring she has worn for five years and throws it into the swimming pool, declaring she is done being Mrs. Mason. The next morning she hands Josh a manila envelope and repeats her demand for a divorce, certain the child is his son with Sierra.
Opening
“Accept this child,” he said, his voice low and steady, “and you can remain Mrs. Mason.”
A wave of murmurs rippled through the guests. Everyone knew how desperately I loved Josh. Everyone assumed that, just like every other time, I would yield.
I rose to my feet, and with a gentle push, sent the champagne tower behind me crashing to the floor.
