The story
Aubrey has always been the forgotten one. A childhood fever left her a step behind, and beside her radiant younger sister Genevieve, she is the slow, sickly daughter her parents sigh over. Even Rhys, the boy she once loved and was engaged to, cast her aside for Genevieve. Only Callum stayed, the one person who found her when she hid and cried, who lit a birthday candle when everyone else forgot.
Then Aubrey overhears the truth: Callum loves Genevieve. He means to marry Aubrey only to stay near her sister. Days later, alone in a hospital corridor, Aubrey learns she is pregnant, and when she tries to tell Callum, Genevieve's voice pulls him away. Genevieve is pregnant too, her husband Rhys missing, and the family insists everything must revolve around her.
On Aubrey's birthday, Callum takes Genevieve to the fireworks instead, leaving Aubrey to blow out her candles alone.
Opening
The doctors said it was the delayed treatment that left me permanently a beat behind. A little slower, a little weaker, never quite catching up to the world around me.
Next to me, my sister, Genevieve, two years younger, was a burst of effervescent sunlight—quick, graceful, and adored. Of course, she was the favorite. Even the boy who was supposed to marry me—my childhood crush and eventual fiancé—grew to dislike my clumsy presence and broke the engagement for her.
