The story
Michael Keyes believed his family had been executed five years ago, and that he was spared only because he had once been the princess's fiancé. Instead, he was sent to a military camp as a slave, where soldiers tortured him until he called them Master and taught him nothing but obedience.
Now his father and sister are alive, and they have brought him home to marry the princess, who carries Ethan's child. They say the death sentence was a lesson, and that he must serve alongside his younger brother. But a lady doctor at the camp told Michael he is terminally ill, with only three days left to live.
Faced with a family that sees his terror as an act, and a brother whose concern hides old cruelty, Michael must survive the home he was punished for.
Opening
Five years after my household was sentenced to death, in my fifth year as a slave at the military camp, someone suddenly brought me away and said I had to marry the princess.
Before I could understand what was happening, I ended up outside my family's mansion. It was supposed to be destroyed.
