The story
Ryleigh hides an acute leukemia diagnosis while her family pours every dollar into dialysis for her older sister, Rachelle, whose uremia will require a kidney. When her father demands she be tested as a donor, Ryleigh refuses and flees to a damp basement room five blocks from an organ donation center.
Her fiancé, Jonah Anders, and her father track her down, begging and then raging. Ryleigh demands 500 thousand dollars for the transplant, letting them believe she is cruel and money-minded. She swallows vitamin pills, refuses painkillers that would harm her kidneys, and conceals her bruises under foundation, planning to leave her kidney to Rachelle once she is gone.
Hated by the people she is trying to save, Ryleigh counts the days in the dark, guarding the organ she means to give.
