The story
Taken from an amusement park at three, Aurora returns to her parents five years later, malnourished, bruised and mute from abuse. Her parents had adopted a daughter in her absence, Chloe, who resents the ghost who has come back. When the adults are not watching, Chloe whispers threats and promises to make them hate her sister.
Chloe's accusations do their work. The bedtime stories and therapy sessions stop. Aurora is made to apologize publicly for cheating, loses her allowance, and is blamed for poisoning Chloe with boiling water; her parents pour scalding water down her throat. Only obedience keeps the peace, and a doctor has told Aurora her failing organs give her a month to live.
On her birthday, Aurora asks her mother if she remembers the date. Her mother brightens: it is the anniversary of the day they brought Chloe home.
