The story
When Kelly’s affair comes to light, her husband Ethan stays unnervingly calm. He refuses her divorce papers, insisting that splitting their assets would damage the company and shock their aging parents. Instead he plays the gracious husband, urging her to answer her lover’s calls and even comforting the young man who begs him to let Kelly go.
Yet Ethan is no saint. He has his own lover, a woman who demands he divorce Kelly or lose her, and he coolly deletes her contact rather than give up his marriage. At the quarterly shareholders’ meeting he meets Amelia Vance, the company’s angel investor, whose cold stare hints at a history between them.
As Kelly and Ethan circle each other in a marriage neither will end, the question is who is truly holding whom hostage.
Opening
When I found out about Kelly’s affair, we were both surprisingly calm.
She shielded the young man behind her, her voice a flat monotone. “Don’t blame him. It was all me. I couldn’t control myself. He’s innocent.”
I nodded, feigning understanding.
That night, Kelly came home and handed me a set of divorce papers.
