The story
For their fourth anniversary, Shane Carter promised Wendy Mercer a trip to Disneyland to make up for the celebration they had missed. But he brings her best friend, Sophie Lane, along too, saying Sophie has waited a long time for this. At the park, a ticket attendant greets Shane and Sophie by name and asks about their third-anniversary castle route, and Wendy realizes the two have shared a yearly tradition she never knew about.
All evening Shane tends to Sophie: he holds the camera for her, drapes his jacket over her shoulders, and gives her the hot cocoa he had waited in line for Wendy. A giant screen wishes Sophie a day like this every year with Shane beside her, cycling through photos from the past three years. At home, Shane insists Sophie stay the night and hands her Wendy's own nightgown and blanket.
Wendy says nothing. She quietly buys a one-way ticket to Southvale for three days later, a place with no castles and no Shane Carter.
Opening
My best friend, Sophie Lane, had a fever, but he brought her along anyway.
"She's been looking forward to this for a long time. Don't ruin it for her."
I looked at the anniversary cake that was already two months late and nodded.
When we entered the park, the ticket attendant glanced at Shane and Sophie, then smiled and handed them two stickers.
"Mr. Carter, Ms. Lane, are you doing the third-anniversary castle route again tonight?
