The story
For a year, ever since her sister Nicole moved into the penthouse of her building, Ella's boyfriend Francesco has kept pressing the wrong elevator button. The champagne, the painkillers, the birthday cake — everything ends up at Nicole's door, always with the same excuse: since he is already here. When Ella's fever rages, he brings medicine to Nicole instead. When rain pours, he sends a car for Nicole. Ella's messages fill their chat; his replies are errands for her sister.
Today her lease expires. As Francesco walks into Nicole's apartment without looking back, Ella closes the elevator doors and lets the movers empty the place. His only message asks her to collect Nicole's coat and buy strawberries. Her mother calls about the wedding; Ella says it is off. After three years of giving in, she is not throwing a tantrum — she is truly letting go.
Opening
"Why didn't you remind me? Whatever. Since we're already outside her door, I might as well help Nicole change her broken lightbulb."
I managed to force a bitter smile.
There it was again. "Since we're already here."
