The story

Charlotte Pruitt's husband, Timothy James, never tires of telling her how ordinary she is. While she cooks and battles morning sickness, he talks to the baby in her belly, praising Gwyneth Henson, the dazzling friend who skis, travels and soars free. When Gwyneth returns from Antarctica, Timothy welcomes her with a dinner and asks Charlotte to cook, though the smell of oil makes her retch.

Charlotte quit her bank job at his urging, and now he calls her a lazy housewife with no ambition. Gwyneth's sincere praise stings worse than mockery, and at dinner the two trade talk of markets and funding plans, shutting her out. When Charlotte mentions a policy shift, Timothy dismisses her as out of date.

Watching them, she sees that marriage gave her the title of wife but never let her into his world. Quietly, she confirms her Wednesday prenatal checkup alone.
